Loaves and Fishes

We had a new record today.   20 soldiers showed up for church.  The most we've ever had before was 15.  What a great group!  It is a challenge to know how much food to fix, not knowing how many will be attending.  Every Saturday I make a new batch of bread so that it will be fresh for Sunday.  I also figure that if we run out of the main course, they can always eat bread!  Today we ate 3 1/2 of the 4 loaves that I brought.  There was one bowl of chicken stew left over.  I don't know how they missed that one.  Chocolate chip cookies filled in the other little round holes in their appetites.

Elder S is our new "greenie", being here about 10 days.  Elder R is the District Leader and they are assigned to our Ft. Eustis group, as well as the Newport News 2nd Ward.  It is frustrating to introduce them to all of the wonderful non-member soldiers who attend and not have the ability to provide teaching opportunities very often because of the soldiers' busy schedules.  This is the building where we hold services on Sunday, and FHE on Tuesdays.  There aren't very many LDS church buildings with a neon "open" sign.

  1. Dear Bro and Sis Elkins. We are the parents of Elder S. He just told us about your blog. Thank you so much for taking care of him. He told us that you are his mission grandparents. We are so thankful for your kindness and patience with him. Email us and explain just what it is that you do down there with the Servicemen and Servicewomen. By the way, Elder Swanson was born in Richmond when we attended dental school at VCU. Our address is specialed@q.com. Thanks again. If there is anything you need from us, please just ask.

  2. Oh my heart be still! How wonderful it is to see a picture of our missionary. Elder R has mentioned you both several times in his emails and what an impact you have made on him. He talks about your kindness and wonderful things you are doing at Ft. Eustis. Thank you so much for watching out for our Mish while he are so far away from home. (Just a little tid-bit. It is Elder R BDay July 22nd- could you give him a little hug/hand shake from us here at home) Let us know if there is anything we can do to help the missionary efforts.
Thanks again for all you do.

    Elder R has a blog also.. http://elderkoltnrogers.blogspot.com/

  3. When I was out in a really small town, my companion and I had to make our own The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints sign and we both placed bets on how long it would take before someone would steal it. It lasted 2 weeks before someone stole it, much longer than either of us had guessed.
